Jack of all Trades, Master of Some

Audio Engineer, Luthier, Musician, and more.

Tom Gillis: a Grammy Award winning audio engineer living in Dallas, Texas. He enjoys long walks with cables and long nights recording music. Since I got my first drumset back in 2007, I have been diving in headfirst into any and all musical endeavors I could get my hands on. I got my first guitar not long after, all while applying everything I could in Liturgical, Orchestra, and Marching band to any instruments available to me.

While attending college at Loyola University New Orleans, I took as many lessons as were available on theory, guitar, and production. I formed bands with friends, attended many open mic nights, and started playing music for mass on Sundays. I would often rotate between playing drums, guitar, and bass. While finishing college, I began working for a studio in the city that housed Elephant Quilt Productions and Marigny Recording studio, where I gained hands on experience on the zoning laws surrounding recording studios, the production process of studio sessions and video shoots, and the construction of sound panels and studios as a whole.

Upon completing my degree, I began to delve into the world of home recordings and making custom audio gear. I got my hands on my first soldering iron and made some simple guitar pedals, cables, and started attempting to repair anything electronic that I had with those tools.

Around that time, the government was presented with new possible legislation that would ideally be restructuring the way artists get paid with the Music Modernization Act, and I began delving into the world of how artists get paid in this frontier of streaming vs owned music. Since then, I have done my best to stay informed with the best methods for songwriters and artists to get paid for their hard work. Mechanical, Sync, publishing, live performances... the list of steps to take is exhausting, and that isn't even including the work it takes to write and produce the music alone.

Moving forward, my goal is to use my skills as an engineer and multi-instrumentalist to be an informed one stop shop of knowledge and skills that can help the budding songwriters of the world to get recorded, get paid, and be heard. Songwriting is one of the last bastions of magic making there is in the world, and I want to do my part to help keep that magic alive.
